Traditional, Holistic & Experiential Treatment Approaches

This is why our treatment team relies greatly on a number of holistic and experiential therapies that heal the mind, body and spirit. These soul-healing approaches include:

Recreational Therapy
We all have a lens through which we see the world: A lens comprised of a our experiences, memories, all of our successes and failures, and all of our traumas. At The Refuge we understand that trauma survivors and addicts simply do not see the world as it actually is. For our clients, their lens is quite distorted and often times shattered, and they see the world through a lens of shame, anger, unresolved grief and debilitating pain and addiction. This is why our clients are often stuck in an endless cycle, a phenomenon known as trauma repetition, where they are drawn to the same shameful and exploitative people, places and activities. Thus, recovery is not just about resolving the past trauma and teaching our clients skills to maintain their recovery; it's also about teaching them new ways to entertain themselves, connect to others, honor their physical body , and ultimately how to redefine fun and start living life again!
As any professional in the field of addiction knows, getting a client motivated in early recovery can be challenging. Addiction has become the exclamation mark to every one of our clients' affairs and they will often be left reeling without those behaviors that likely occupied the vast majority of their lives. Regardless of how traumatic and chaotic their lives were, they now feel empty and lost. To our clients, running from police, narrowly escaping death, exploiting themselves and being in constant physical and emotional danger was a normal Tuesday night. Without something to take its place, our clients will feel bored, they romance their drug use, seek toxic relationships, explore potential process and cross addictions, and they look for any other avenue they can find to not be in their bodies and not live in their own skin. This is why we have to not just instruct our clients how to develop positive replacement behaviors, we have to show them!
A Treatment Program Uniquely Designed for You
Many men and women who suffer from the effects of unresolved trauma, PTSD, depression and addiction become very detached from the world both physically and emotionally. Desperate for relief, our clients attempt to cope by using drugs and alcohol, sexual behaviors, or self-injurious behavior in an attempt to run from the pain within. Because each individual is unique and responds differently to each treatment approach, our clinicians are trained and certified in a variety of different therapeutic methods and modalities. Clients are assigned to a therapist and treatment team upon admission and a tailor made treatment program is designed (and re-designed as needed) to fit each individual.
